I’m not really into the colors of red or yellow when it comes to designing. I prefer the cool colors of purple and blue mixed with magenta and spikes of orange here and there. But if you have a sunny spot and you want the colors to show up, red and yellow flowers are a fine choice to create a vibrant summer landscape.
I took this photo at Wells Medina Nursery in Medina, WA. Not all nurseries have the space for a display garden but Wells Medina does and uses it wisely. I recommend going there and checking it out. Notice here how the yellow daylilies pop against the spikes of red astilbe. They will not be ignored! Astilbes are more of a shade plant but I’ve noticed that here, as well as in my own yard, they can take quite a hot blast of sun as long as they’re watered.
This is an active color combo that makes good use of the sun’s light. It’s not soothing but it shouts summer and I love it.
