This is such a great tidbit of advice about fiction writing from Tim Gautreaux. With his words he validates all writers, which I think is so valuable. When I was a greener fiction writer, I worried that my past (or my current life) was boring compared to someone like Graham Greene or Toni Morrison. ?? Now of course, I realize I was comparing my self to others (older, more established others) and that wasn’t fair. I just needed to focus on what my experiences could help me say to the world.
People own the territory they are born into. That’s the richest ore writers can mine…. Get in touch with where you’re from, even if it’s a subdivision in Kenner, Louisiana, that is your literary heritage. If you look at it closely enough, you’ll see that it is as exotic and unique as some Central or South American culture in the mountains.
