Sometimes he used a spade in his garden, and sometimes he read and wrote. He had but one name for these two kinds of labor; he called them gardening.
― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

Welcome! I’m Karen Hugg and I like to cultivate stories. Whether they’re rooted in my experiences like creative non-fiction, mostly fictional like novels, or miscellaneous vignettes about something in between, I like to share my written words. Stories help us make sense of our lives and spur us forward. I’ve been arranging words since I was a child and even though I’ve tried to stop a few times over the years, I’ve never been successful at escaping expressing myself. When I worked as an editor, I wrote in my spare time. When I became a garden designer, I wrote in my spare time. Now that I’m a wife and a mother and a writer and gardener, I still write in my spare time. What else is there to do in between life and sleep?
